Opening Range Breakout Failure: Back Inside the Range

In short

The opening range is the high-low band of the first part of the session (ORH/ORL). An opening fails when price pushes above the opening range high, or below the low, but then cannot follow through. Price returns inside the range instead. It is a structure, not a signal.

How the pattern unfolds

  1. The setup

Stock A sets an opening range with a high (ORH) near 104 in the first part of the session.

  2. What triggers it

Price breaks above 104 (the ORH). The move then stalls, makes no follow-through, and retreats back below the opening range high.

  3. What it means — and does not

Returning inside the opening range after breaking it is the failure footprint. Educationally, ORB structure is read together with follow-through and context. The break on its own is not decisive.

What this does not establish

The failure reading is invalidated if price reclaims the opening range high at 104 and holds above it. That would mean the original break was genuine and merely slow. The high of the failed break is the conventional invalidation level. Note that this pattern is the failure of a signal, so its invalidation is the original signal working.

Confirmation checklist

4

Did price hold above the opening range high, or fall back inside?

Was there follow-through after the break, or an immediate stall?

Is the broader context (trend, breadth) consistent with the break?

Remember: ORB is a framework, not a guaranteed outcome.

Common mistakes reading it

2
  • Acting on the first tick beyond the opening range without follow-through.

  • Ignoring the wider trend and treating the opening range in isolation.

An opening range break fails and price returns inside the range. What is the general lesson?

  • That opening range breakouts do not work and are best ignored altogether
  • That the break should have been taken in the opposite direction instead
  • That the break alone is not decisive
Show the answer

C. That the break alone is not decisive

One session cannot establish that a structure does not work, and taking the other side is the same mistake reversed. The transferable point is the one that also applies to support, resistance, necklines and gaps: what happens after the break is the evidence.

Frequently asked

3
What is the opening range?

It is the high-low band of the first part of the trading session. The high is the ORH and the low is the ORL.

When is an ORB considered failed?

When price breaks the opening range but cannot follow through and returns inside it.

Is a failed ORB a signal to trade the other way?

No. LearnNifty explains the structure for learning and does not provide trade signals.

Where this comes from. This way of reading a chart is widely taught. It is not a rule from any circular, so there is no document to cite.
