NSE market holidays 2026

In short

The NSE equity and equity-derivative segments are shut on 16 weekdays in 2026, on top of every Saturday and Sunday. Both segments observe the same list. A further 4 published holidays fall on a weekend and cost no trading session. 7 of the closures sit beside a weekend, giving runs of three days or more with no trading. Every date below carries the circular that set it.

Here is every day the NSE equity and equity-derivative (F&O) market is closed in 2026. Each row names the exchange circular that set it. All dates are in Indian Standard Time (IST).

Settlement holidays are a separate list. The exchange can be closed while the clearing corporation is not. A settlement can also move for reasons that never shut the market. The settlement date calculator answers that question, and the published exceptions are on the full 2026 calendar.

Long weekends in 2026 (7)

A closure next to a weekend makes three or more days in a row with no trading. No circular lists these. They are counted from the closures above, so a calendar change updates them.

A break in trading is not a break in the calendar. A trade placed before one of these still settles, on the first clearing day after it. The settlement calculator counts settlement days rather than calendar days. Weekends, exchange holidays and settlement holidays do not count. That is why the gap it reports across a long weekend is wider than the usual one.

Holidays that fall on a weekend (4)

Holidays the exchange publishes that land on a Saturday or a Sunday. They are kept in their own table because the market is already shut on those days. Unlike the list above, they take away nothing that would otherwise have been a trading session.

Saturday and Sunday holidays named in the 2026 exchange calendar, in the circular's own order.
DateDayOccasionEffect on trading
Sun, 15 Feb, 2026SundayMahashivratriNone — the market is closed on this day of the week in any case.

Sun, 8 Nov, 2026SundayDiwali Laxmi PujanA special session runs on this day. Its timings are in the special sessions table below.

In 2026 every one of these falls inside an ordinary weekend, so none of them lengthens a break in trading. That is why they are counted separately from the 16 closures above. Adding the two together overstates how many trading days the year loses.

Weekend dates with a trading session (2)

The weekend rule has exceptions. Sometimes the exchange holds a session on a Saturday or Sunday. Its circular sets the timing. That day then counts as a trading day, so a long weekend ends there.

Where this list comes from

Every date above comes from an exchange circular. Each row names its circular. The circulars are listed here, so you can check them yourself.

NSE/CMTR/71775

Dated 12 Dec 2025. The annual 2026 holiday circular. It also carries the weekend-dated holidays listed above.

15 of the 16 trading holidays on this page carry it.

NSE/CMTR/72260

Dated 12 Jan 2026. An addendum published after the annual list, adding a closure that was not in it.

One trading holiday on this page carries it: Municipal Corporation General Elections, Thu, 15 Jan, 2026.

How to check a date yourself

Note the number in the row's Source circular column. Open the exchange's holiday page for NSE Capital Market. Find the circular with that number and read the date. These dates were last checked on 2026-09-07. A newer circular may have changed a date since then. If a date matters to you, confirm it on the exchange website.

NSE market holidays 2026 — FAQ

Is the Indian stock market open this Friday?

Fridays are otherwise regular trading days. Whether the NSE and BSE are open on a given Friday depends on one thing: whether that date falls on a published exchange trading holiday. You can confirm it by checking the date against the official NSE/BSE holiday calendar for the current year. The holidays page reflects that calendar. If the Friday is not listed as a holiday, the cash and F&O segments follow normal hours.

Is NSE open on weekends?

The NSE cash and equity derivatives (F&O) segments are closed on Saturdays and Sundays as a standard rule. Trading normally runs Monday through Friday, except on declared exchange holidays. Some exchanges occasionally run special weekend sessions, such as scheduled disaster-recovery or mock-trading sessions. These are announced separately and are not regular trading days.

What are the Muhurat trading timings for Diwali 2026?

NSE holds the Diwali Muhurat session on Sunday 8 November 2026. Its own circular, NSE/CMTR/76941 (19 October 2026), sets the time of every stage, from pre-open to post-close. The special sessions table on this page lists each time. The Muhurat guide explains them in simple words. These times are for NSE equity. F&O and BSE have their own notices.

When is the next NSE market holiday?

The next NSE market holiday is the nearest upcoming date on the exchange's official trading-holiday list. That list runs for the current calendar year. The holidays page lists these dates in order. The next closed day is the first one falling after today. Note that a holiday may apply to specific segments. The cash and derivatives segments and settlement holidays can differ.

Are NSE and BSE holidays the same?

For most trading holidays, the NSE and BSE publish identical dates. Both exchanges generally align their calendars for major national and festival holidays. Differences can occasionally appear in settlement holidays. They can also appear in segment-specific schedules such as currency or commodity trading. Checking each exchange's official calendar confirms whether a particular date applies to both.

Why is the stock market closed on some weekdays?

The NSE and BSE close on certain weekdays because those dates are listed as trading holidays. They cover national holidays and major festivals, as published in the annual exchange holiday list. These are scheduled in advance, separate from weekend closures. Unscheduled closures can also occur in rare cases. The exchanges announce those through official circulars.
