Can a market be open for one order and closed for another?
When does normal trading begin?
Cash stocks are company shares bought or sold directly. In continuous trading, orders match as they arrive. On a regular NSE trading day, it starts at 09:15 IST (Indian Standard Time, the time used across India).
Does every segment close together?
A segment is a group of products, such as cash stocks or equity derivatives. A stock has derivatives when contracts such as options are based on it. Cash stocks with derivatives leave continuous trading at 15:15 IST. Other cash stocks continue to 15:30, and equity derivatives to 15:40. A closing auction collects orders to work out one closing price.
What changes on a trading holiday?
The regular trading session does not run. A dated example is Dussehra on 20 October 2026 in the exchange calendar. Special sessions are announced separately.

What can happen near the close?
It is 15:25 IST on a regular trading day. A stock that has derivatives is in the closing auction. A stock without derivatives still trades. Equity derivatives also trade continuously.
What this does not establish
An open market label does not mean every segment accepts the same order at that moment.
In short
- Check the segment and session, not just one market-wide clock.
- Holidays and special sessions follow the published calendar.
A market-open label appears. What else matters before reading that status?
- Every equity product must accept the same orders
- The segment, its session and the holiday calendar
- Only the clock time, because all segments close together
Show the answer
B. The segment, its session and the holiday calendar
Each segment has its own session times. Holidays and special sessions can change the usual day.
