Which activity best reflects the primary professional role of a research analyst?

A research analyst gathers, evaluates and interprets information to produce reasoned research or analysis. The analyst does not guarantee returns, does not need to execute all client trades and does not set public policy. Remember: Research analysts convert evidence into structured analysis. They do not promise outcomes.

Hint Common mistake: Confusing research with sales promises, portfolio execution or public-policy functions.

During a management meeting, executives repeatedly emphasise an aggressive growth target but provide little evidence about capacity, demand or funding. What should a research analyst do?

Good research requires professional scepticism. Management guidance is an input, not a fact to be accepted or rejected automatically. The analyst should test it against independent evidence and the company’s historical ability to execute. Remember: Management access is useful only when combined with independent verification and disciplined judgement.

Hint Common mistake: Treating management guidance as either unquestionable fact or worthless information.
